Turbochargers
A turbocharger, or turbo, is a forced induction device that uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine , which in turn comresses the intake air and forces it into the engine cylinders. This increased airflow allows for more fuel to be burned, resulting in increased power and efficiency for the engine.
Function:
-
Exhaust-driven turbine:Exhaust gases from the engine are routed to a turbine wheel, causing it to spin at very high speeds (often between 80,000 and 200,000 RPM).
-
Compressor:The turbine is connected to a compressor wheel via a shaft. As the turbine spins, it drives the compressor wheel.
-
Air compression:The compressor wheel draws in fresh air and compresses it, forcing it into the engine’s intake manifold.
